England midfielder Anita Asante has joined 2013 Swedish title winners and UEFA Women's Champions League contenders FCR Malmö from FC Göteborg on a two-year contract.
The 28-year-old, equally at home in defence, currently has a metatarsal injury but will be eligible to play in Malmö's European campaign if registered – and to aid their domestic title defence in 2014. Malmö, who regained the championship from Tyresö FF this month, take on holders VfL Wolfsburg in the UEFA Women's Champions League on 9 and 13 November, though Asante is not expected to be fit by then.
Capped 67 times by England, Asante said of her new adventure: "It feels great – I am looking forward to it." Coach Jonas Eidevall added: "We expect that she will be back in January. We have checked her [injured] foot as thoroughly as we can – it's a considered decision."
Asante moved to Sweden in 2012 with Göteborg after a three-year spell in the United States. She played for Göteborg in two UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-finals, the ex-Chelsea LFC and Arsenal LFC midfielder having also won the 2007 UEFA Women's Cup and five domestic titles with the Gunners.
