Olympique Lyonnais's female team succeeded where their men's side failed last night as a goalless draw at Umeå IK proved enough for a place in next month's UEFA Women's Champions League final in Madrid.

Leading 3-2 after the first leg, the French side arrived in Sweden for the postponed return determined to avoid a repeat of the 2008 UEFA Women's Cup semi-final when they lost out to the same side before also falling in the last four a year later. A repeat never really looked likely and but for some magnificent goalkeeping Caroline Jönsson, progress would have been much more serene.

Sweden's No1 was busy from the off. The visitors' Lara Dickenmann had already come close when, on 14 minutes, she latched onto an Ingvild Stensland through ball in space but Jönsson was quick to smother the danger. It was not looking good for Umeå, and the outlook grew cloudier when Hanna Pettersson, scorer of both goals in Lyon, was taken off on a stretcher with an ankle injury.

The French side immediately set about underlining their advantage, Shirley Cruz Trana and Stensland dominating midfield and, as the match wore on, the speed of Élodie Thomis, Dickenmann and Louisa Nécib began to tell. Dickenmann could have ensured a calmer finale but Jönsson, at full stretch, once again kept her out.

Lyon were not to be denied, however, and 24 hours after their male counterparts' UEFA Champions League ambitions were ended by FC Bayern München, the women ensured the club would be represented in Getafe on in 20 May, where they will face 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.
