The draw for the round of 16 on 8 and 15 March follows and there are no seeded teams. The 16 balls containing slips of paper for 'Winners of match 1' to 'Winners of match 16' are placed in one bowl and shuffled. The first team drawn are to play their first match at home against the second team drawn and the same procedure is then repeated for the other matches. There are no restrictions on the round of 16 draw.
Thursday review
Rubin needed just a point at PAOK to hold off the challenge of Tottenham Hotspur FC in Group A, but looked in trouble when they had a man sent off and went a goal behind early on in Greece. With Spurs winning well at Shamrock Rovers FC, the London club's hopes were suddenly raised, but Nelson Valdez equalised to give the Russian side the draw they required.
With the top two decided in Groups B and C, the other three qualifiers all came from the evening's second set of games. Udinese hosted Celtic FC in Group I knowing they would be through at the Scottish side's expense if they avoided defeat. Although they went behind, Antonio Di Natale's equaliser on the cusp of half-time helped them through as section runners-up behind Atlético.
Club Brugge made sure of both qualification and top spot in Group H by holding Braga, who were already through. That 1-1 result rendered Birmingham City FC's 1-0 win against NK Maribor irrelevant, with the English side needing a Braga victory to have any hope. In Group G, FK Austria Wien completed their part of the bargain by beating Malmö FF, but AZ's 1-1 home draw with Metalist meant the Dutch league leaders went into the round of 32 alongside the Ukrainian pool winners.
