SC Braga, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Metalist Kharkiv, PAOK FC, R. Standard de Liège and Hannover 96 booked their places in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 on Wednesday evening.

Braga progressed with a 1-0 home win against Birmingham City FC, but it was the other Group H game which produced the drama of the night. Club Brugge KV were three down at NK Maribor but came back to triumph 4-3 – through Ryan Donk's 90th-minute strike – and go top of the section. However, they can still be caught by Birmingham.

Perhaps the biggest shock came at White Hart Lane where ten-man PAOK beat Tottenham Hotspur FC 2-1 to become the first side sure of going beyond Group A. FC Rubin Kazan, 4-1 victors over visiting Shamrock Rovers FC, will join them with a point in Salonika in their concluding fixture.

Metalist, meanwhile, have clinched pole position in Group G having defeated FK Austria Wien 4-1 in Kharkiv. The visitors can still advance in the competition, though, after Malmö FF held AZ Alkmaar to a goalless draw which leaves the Eredivisie outfit just two points above Austria ahead of Metalist's trip to the Netherlands on 15 December.

There is also one qualifying berth up for grabs in Group I after Atlético overcame Celtic FC 1-0 in Glasgow to ensure their passage to the last 32. Udinese Calcio, restricted to a 0-0 stalemate at Stade Rennais FC, need only avoid a reverse against Celtic in a fortnight to proceed alongside the Spaniards.

Standard guaranteed European football in the spring and Group B bragging rights by winning 2-0 at home to Hannover, who also progressed by virtue of a superior head-to-head record against FC København, who can no longer overtake the German team following their 1-1 draw at FC Vorskla Poltava.

Though PSV Eindhoven and Legia Warszawa were already assured of the top two berths in Group C, Fred Rutten's men are now certain of being section winners having prevailed 3-0 in the Polish capital. Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC moved off the foot of the standings with a 3-1 victory at FC Rapid Bucureşti.
