Tomasson delivers Demark's proud response

After Denmark silenced their detractors with a shock 3-2 win in Portugal, captain Jon Dahl Tomasson responded to the critics with the words: "People have been asking for a reaction from us – we delivered that."

Frantic finale
Denmark secured an impressive FIFA World Cup qualifying victory after a flurry of late goals, with Christian Poulsen and Daniel Jensen scoring at the death to overturn a 2-1 deficit and gain maximum points. With his team-mates refusing to speak to reporters because of recent criticism, Tomasson had the satisfaction of delivering his side's only post-match statement: "We dedicate this win to those who believed in us. People have been asking for a reaction from us – we delivered that tonight. Now we want to share the joy of our triumph with our fans who supported us in the stadium tonight, and with those back home and with each other."

Press praise
Having failed to qualify for both the 2006 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2008™, the national team's stock had been low among Danish pundits, with Saturday's 0-0 Group 1 draw in Hungary doing little to lift morale. However, the papers were exultant on Thursday morning. "Sometimes reality beats even the wildest fantasies," wrote Ekstra Bladet, while BT addressed Morten Olsen's men, saying: "Four points from two of the most difficult away matches in the qualifying group, an away win against one of the strongest football nations in the world, and lots of that spirit which we have missed so much. This was what we wanted, and we thank you for that!"
