It was a pretty normal Bundesliga match between Bayern München and Wolfsburg at half-time.
Bayern had dominated, but did not really click and Daniel Caligiuri had opened the scoring for Wolfsburg, like their hosts unbeaten in the Bundesliga before tonight. Josep Guardiola changed things at the break, bringing on Robert Lewandowski.
The Polish striker responded with five goals in the space of eight minutes and 59 seconds or, if you prefer, on 51, 52, 55, 57 and 60 minutes to secure a 5-1 win and keep Bayern perfect after six fixtures.
Records he broke:
- His first three goals were scored within 3 minutes 22 seconds, the fastest hat-trick in Bundesliga history. Former record holder Michael Tönnies, who had scored three goals in six minutes in 1991 for Duisburg against Karlsruhe and a certain Oliver Kahn, congratulated Lewandowski on Twitter: "You deserve this!"
- Four goals in 5 minutes 42 seconds is the fastest in the league's history.
- ... and, naturally, five in eight minutes 59 seconds also set a Bundesliga best.
- Lewandowski is the first substitute in Bundesliga history to score five.
- It was the first time in 24 years that somebody has scored five goals in a Bundesliga match – since Tönnies against Karlsruhe.
- Had Wolfsburg not cleared the ball off the line in the 69th minute, Lewandowski would have equalled Dieter Müller's 1977 Bundesliga best of six goals in a single match.
- It was Lewandowski's first Bayern hat-trick.
- This evokes memories of April 2013, when Lewandowski scored four for Borussia Dortmund in a 4-1 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Reaction:
Robert Lewandowski
This was crazy. I just shot and did not think much about what was happening. Five goals – that's an incredible evening. After the third and fourth goal I quickly looked at the video screen and though: "Oh!" Pep Guardiola did not have to say anything, I knew what I had to do.
I don't think I have ever scored five before. Certainly not in 45 minutes. If things are working for you, you have to try to go on and score more goals. I am staying at home tonight, chilling. We have important games in front of us and have to stay focused.
Josep Guardiola, Bayern coach
People are asking me, "what happened?" I'm answering: "I have no idea!" Sometimes, we cannot describe it. I have never experienced such a situation before, neither as player nor as coach.
Five goals in nine minutes. I am very, very happy for Robert. He has been a big player in Germany and the entire world for a while now. Sometimes, you just have to let those players have a go at it. There are those players, with huge talent.
Manuel Neuer, Bayern goalkeeper
It was a great experience. Lewy has written football history.
Philipp Lahm, Bayern captain
I have been playing football for a few years now … I have never seen anything like this! But you have to remain critical: He could have grabbed seven ... Then you have to rub those two chances he squandered under his nose. That must not happen!
Christian Träsch, Wolfsburg defender
When it's 1-1, it's not tragic. It's not, when it goes to 2-1. But then it's 3-1, 4-1, 5-1. We were like amateurs.
Daniel Caligiuri, Wolfsburg midfielder
Yes, that was a demonstration of power by Bayern. After it went to 3-1, we lost our heads and were not on the pitch any more. I don't really know what happened in those nine minutes.
Dieter Hecking, Wolfsburg coachWhat am I supposed to say? A world-class striker has taken five shots on goal and could have scored seven. But despite all of his quality, this must not happen to us. There is no way of explaining this. What we have to say: five goals in nine minutes, that's not supposed to happen!
Mats Hummels, Lewandowski's former Dortmund team-mate
Ha ha ha, sorry, but I have never before in my life seen anything like this!
