UEFA Champions League landmarks, milestones

UEFA.com reflects on UEFA Champions League matchday four, when FC Bayern München and Cristiano Ronaldo equalled significant competition highs and Manchester City FC rewrote their club record books.

• The 1-0 defeat of FC Viktoria Plzeñ was Bayern's ninth UEFA Champions League victory in a row, equalling FC Barcelona's competition record of successive victories, set between 18/09/2002 and 18/02/2003. *

• Ronaldo scored his eighth goal UEFA Champions League of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Juventus, equalling the group stage record with two games still to play. He matched a tally previously reached by Ruud van Nistelrooy (in 2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) – although Zlatan Ibrahimović could pip Ronaldo to a new scoring mark as the Paris Saint-Germain striker is on seven.

• Manchester City broke new ground as they reached the round of 16 for the first time with a 5-2 win against PFC CSKA Moskva. Álvaro Negredo became the first City player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick, while strike partner Sergio Agüero's double meant he became City's 11-goal highest scorer in European competition.

• Celtic FC did not have a single player sent off in their first 50 UEFA Champions League matches – since reaching that milestone they have suffered two in as many games.

• The 0-0 draw away to Real Sociedad de Fútbol was the 20th time a match involving Manchester United FC has ended goalless, equalling AC Milan's competition record.

• With FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer 04 Leverkusen drawing 0-0 in Group A's other fixture, it was only the seventh time a section has had a matchnight without a goal.

• FK Austria Wien are the only one of the 128 teams that have graced the group stage over the years not to score a goal.

• A number of landmarks were reached on matchday four: Borussia Dortmund and Olympique de Marseille played their 100th European Cup games; Chelsea FC's 3-0 home victory over FC Schalke 04 was their 100th in UEFA competition. Marseille also moved to 150 goals in the European Cup with their 3-2 loss to SSC Napoli while SL Benfica conceded for the 400th time in UEFA competition against Olympiacos FC.

• A number of landmarks could be reached in the near future. In the European Cup, Dortmund have won 49 matches and Benfica have drawn the same number. In UEFA competition, Barcelona have 99 draws, Chelsea have 49 draws, while Olympiacos have lost 99 times. Celtic have conceded 299 goals.

• A number of scoring landmarks could be reached in the near future. In the European Cup, FC Zenit (46), Austria Wien (95), Paris (96) and Juventus (347) are all closing in on significant figures, while Ajax have conceded 198 times in the competition.

• In UEFA competition, Milan have scored 597 goals and Manchester United have conceded 297.

* Barcelona won 11 successive European matches during the 2002/03 campaign. The sequence commenced in the third qualifying round against Legia Warszawa before continuing into the competition proper. The streak ended when they were held 0-0 at FC Internazionale Milano in the second group stage.
