Anderlecht (BEL)
Anderlecht started pre-season exactly a month after the end of their 2016/17 campaign, on 21 June. René Weiler's men defeated Zulte Waregem 2-1 in the Belgian Super Cup on 22 July, and launched their bid for a 35th title on 28 July with a 0-0 draw away to Antwerp.

Atlético Madrid (ESP)
Atlético began pre-season on 6 July with their traditional training camp in Los Angeles de San Rafael, an hour from Madrid, with the new Liga campaign provisionally starting the weekend of 19 August. Diego Simeone's side will commence a new era at their new 68,000 capacity stadium, the Estadio Metropolitano.

Their bid to reclaim the Liga crown kicks off on the weekend of 19 August.

Benfica returned to work on 30 June. Having won a fourth straight Portuguese championship last term – an unprecedented achievement for the club – the Eagles now have Porto's record five consecutive titles in their sights. They won 3-1 against Vitória SC in the Portuguese Super Cup on 5 August, four days before initiating their Liga title defence.

Feyenoord won 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The Rotterdammers' title defence starts eight days later at home to Twente.
