• Manchester United FC sign Eric Cantona from rivals Leeds United AFC in a deal worth €2m – he goes on to play a starring role as Sir Alex Ferguson's side end a 26-year wait for the English title that season.

• Cantona was on target a fortnight earlier, along with Jean-Pierre Papin, as France defeated Finland 2-1 – the Bleus' 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign would ultimately end in failure, however.

• Turkish team Fenerbahçe SK endure a night to forget in the UEFA Cup, imploding in the Czech Republic as SK Sigma Olomouc win 7-1 to overturn a 1-0 deficit – the visitors finish with just eight men.
